Physiotherapy: Acute Care
The Acute Care Physiotherapy team provides assessment and treatment to acute, elderly and intensive care inpatients who have difficulty with breathing and/or mobility.
Acute Care Physiotherapy are part of the Physiotherapy department.
Welcome to the City Hospitals Sunderland Physiotherapy Acute Care Team.
The team works in partnership with all services involved in your care. We work with you to improve the quality of living for you and your family. We help you to control your rehabilitation pathway with an aim to improving your movement experiences, reaching your optimal functional ability and role within your family, social environment and workplace.
The Acute Care Physiotherapy Team assess and treat people who have a variety of needs including problems with breathing, balance, walking and joint movement.
Conditions we treat include asthma, bronchiectasis, chronic obstructive airways disease (COPD), pneumonia, lung cancer, dementia, Parkinson's Disease and post operatively.
We can help you to:
- Self-manage chest problems
- Clear chest secretions
- Improve, regain or maintain movements
- Maintain or progress mobility
- Support discharge home

Out of Hours: Switchboard
Emergency chest care: 16.30-08.30
Weekend/Bank Holiday: 08.30 – 16.30
The Physiotherapy Acute Care Team is based at Sunderland Royal Hospital. Home visits to help facilitate your discharge home are provided on a needs basis.
The team provides a service to:
- Integrated Critical Care Unit (ICCU)
- Medical Wards
- Care of the Elderly Wards
- Paediatric Wards, post delivery suite and Niall Quinn Children's Centre
Referral is made by ward staff.
