About Physiotherapy at City Hospitals Sunderland

Our Physiotherapy teams provide treatment for all ages from new born through to older adults. We have a range of specialist services; each is led by an Expert Physiotherapist. This means that we can ensure that you are provided with the most effective treatment for your problem.

We work in partnership with other health care professionals to identify treatment goals that are centred on your needs whether you are a patient in hospital, attending an outpatient appointment or we see you in a community setting.

Our staff

All of our Physiotherapists are registered as Chartered Health and Care Professions Council. This means that all of our Physiotherapists meet the standards for professional skills, knowledge and behaviour.

We have a range of specialist services; each is led by an Expert Physiotherapist. This means that we can ensure that patients are provided with the most effective treatment for their problem.

Our Physiotherapists are provided with post graduate training to ensure the treatment provided is innovative and up to date with research.

Our services

Acute Care Physiotherapy

This team provides assessment and treatment to inpatients who are admitted to an elderly care, gynaecological, intensive care, high dependency care, medical, paediatric, renal, surgical ward or urology.

Conditions include: Asthma, Bronchiectasis, Chronic Obstructive Airways Disease (COPD), Dementia, Lung Cancer, Parkinson’s Disease, Pneumonia, Post-Operative patients.

Cardiac Physiotherapy

This team provides assessment and treatment to outpatients who have difficulty due to heart problems or due to dysfunctional breathing patterns (also known as hyperventilation and over breathing).

Cardiac Rehabilitation is offered following: Angina, Cardiomyopathy, Coronary angioplasty, Dysfunctional Breathing Pattern, Heart attack, Heart surgery, Pacemaker and/ or ICD inserted.

Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy

This team provides assessment and treatment to inpatients and outpatients with a range of muscle, bone and joint problems. We also provide treatment to patients with women's health problems.

Conditions include: Arthritis – OA / RA, Back and neck pain, Complex limb correction surgery, Day case surgery, Facial Palsy, Fractures, Joint Pain, Joint replacement surgery, soft tissue repair surgery, fracture fixation surgery, Post-operative treatment / Rehabilitation, Soft Tissue Injury.

Neurological Physiotherapy

This team provides assessment and treatment to inpatients and outpatients who have movement difficulties due to central nervous system pathology and genetic disorder. Members of this team also provide treatment to patients following lower limb amputation.

Conditions include: Cerebral Palsy, Guillain Barre Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Parkinson ’s Disease, Spinal Cord Injury and Stroke.


Paediatric Physiotherapy

Sunderland Integrated Musculoskeletal Service

This team provides assessment and treatment to outpatients referred by their GP for a range of muscle, bone and joint problems.

Conditions include: Arthritis – OA / RA, Back and neck pain, Joint Pain, Soft Tissue Injury.


Locations

Physiotherapy Services are provided in a variety of settings including:

  • Sunderland Royal Hospital throughout inpatient wards and the Physiotherapy Outpatient Department, Entrance 8/B level.


  • Community settings: leisure centres, health centres and GP practices.


  • Children’s Centre, Durham Road; however the team does visit some children within the nursery and school environment.


  • When necessary home visits for both children and adults can be arranged.
