Pain service

Our service comprises of two main areas - acute pain and chronic pain; acute provides support to surgical patients and other medical conditions; chronic management helps patients suffering from long term pain.

The Pain service team are part of the Theatres department.

The Pain Management Unit at Sunderland is one of the biggest of its kind in the North of England. The most recent available figures show an annual Outpatient attendance of 1350 new patients to the Pain Service. The clinical team comprises of consultants, specialist nurses, pharmacist, junior doctors and is supported by secretarial staff. There is a close liaison with Psychology and Physiotherapy for patients who require these services.

Outpatient Pain Clinics are accessible through Choose and Book for GP referrals at Washington Galleries, Monkwearmouth Hospital, Cleadon Park Health Centre - South Shields and at Chester Wing of Sunderland Royal Hospital. Patients may also get referred directly to a Pain Clinic by another Specialist.
