Sunderland Royal Hospital has 21 operating theatres across 3 levels serving specialities across the hospital from Ear, Nose and Throat to Urology.
Sunderland Royal Hospital Theatres are part of the Theatres department.
Theatre suites at
C level
consists of 8 theatres covering a wide range of surgical specialities,
including General Surgery, Ear Nost and Throat (ENT) and Oral/Max fax. 2 of the theatres on this
floor are dedicated Digital theatres. The emergency Theatre is also located on
this floor which provides a 24 hour emergency service
D level
consists of a 9 theatre suite covering Orthopaedics, Gynaecology, Urology day
case and Pain lists. 5 of the theatres on D level have specialised laminar flow
ventilation systems, imperative for joint replacement.
There is also a purpose built block room which is located in D level theatre. This room provides anaesthesia for hand surgery and dedicated hand lists which do not have an anaesthetist allocated to them. The block room also aids the efficiency of throughput on elective lists by allowing parallel processing of patients
There are
also 2 theatre’s, in a separate block, covering Urology on D level.
On F floor the theatres are two specialised Paediatric theatres.

Both C and D level theatres are located in the Hylton Road Block of Sunderland Royal Hospital. They are most conveniently reached from Chester Wing Outpatients or the main entrance.
