Epilepsy Service

City Hospitals Sunderland Epilepsy service is run by doctors and nurses with a special interest and expertise in epilepsy.

The Trust's Epilepsy is part of the Neurology department.

First Seizure Clinics, and two dedicated rapid access clinics weekly for suspected first seizures, supported when available by Epilepsy Specialist Nurse (ESN). You will be seen by a Consultant with expertise in blackouts/seizures, and it is important that you bring someone who witnessed the seizure/blackout with you when you attend.

Our team includes an ESN who runs her own clinics and can provide support and advice to help you and your family manage your symptoms and administer your own medication so you can carry on with normal daily life.

We provide a range of specialist investigations to help understand why you have developed the condition and how best to treat it via access to Electroencephalogram (EEG), and radiology for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and/or Computerised Tomography (CT) imaging.

Dedicated transition clinic for young adults transitioning to adult services ensuring continuity of care and ongoing support usually supported by paediatric and adult Neurologists and paediatric and adult ESNs.

Antenatal clinic for women with epilepsy, (via maternity services) with support from epilepsy team when required. Preconception advice regarding antiepileptic drugs and pregnancy.

Support from ESN via telephone advice line for health professionals, patients, carers and families. Sign posting and referring to individualized relevant services in house, and in the community to ensure that people with complex neurological conditions get the support and care they need to lead a normal life as possible.

Outpatient appointments are provided at Sunderland Royal Hospital.
