The Wear Base Unit is a partnership of teachers from the Acute Hospitals, Mental Health and General Practice of South Tyneside, Sunderland and Durham. Geographically we represent a large area, which will give students the opportunity to see patients in a wide range of backgrounds and experience clinical practice in a range of settings. Medical education and training
City Hospitals Sunderland was the first trust in the north east to become an NHS Foundation Trust and was recently rated as 'Good' by the Care Quality Commission. |
The Trust is focused on becoming the 3rd centre in the North East region, developing more complex/specialised services for a larger population.
The Department of Medical Education within City Hospitals Sunderland is made up of the following functions which are located within the Education Centre, Sunderland Royal Hospital:
- Undergraduate Medical Education
- Postgraduate Medical Education
- EWTR Compliance /Junior Doctor rota support
Led by Mrs Cathy Emmerson, Director of Medical Education, the structure of the Department has been specifically designed to deliver the current and expected developments in all areas whilst utilising in house expertise across all functions.
Postgraduate Medical Education
The Postgraduate Education team facilitates the ongoing training of all doctors, foundation doctors and specialty doctors.
Speciality Training
The Specialty Training facilitates the postgraduate training of hospital based doctors and is based in the Education Centre at Sunderland Royal Hospital. We look after trainees appointed to Specialist Registrar (SpR), Specialty Registrar (StR), Specialty Training Posts (STs 1 - 6) Fixed Term Specialty Training Posts (FTSTA) and Locum Appointment for Training posts (LAT).
Further information in relation to the Undergraduate Curriculum including timetables, teaching resources, study guides and learning outcomes can be found on the Learning Support Environment for students or Teaching Support Environment for staff.
Foundation Programme
Foundation Programme (FP) is a two-year generic training programme which forms the bridge between medical school and specialist/general practice training. FP Trainees will have the opportunity to gain experience in a series of placements in a variety of specialties and healthcare settings.
Tasters
One or two week tasters are available in various specialties across the Trust. The purpose of such tasters is potentially two fold: firstly, to give F2 trainees some understanding of what the specialty could offer as a future career; and to engender an understanding of the specialty and its contribution to the care and safety and patients.
More information can be obtained from the Postgraduate Medical Education Department.
Successful applicants will be asked in their formal job offer to express an interest (non-binding on their part) in one of the above-mentioned rotations in order for us to be able to begin the process of mapping individuals to posts.
European Working Time Regulations/Junior Doctor Rota Support
The City Hospitals Sunderland Junior Doctor/EWTR Support function is part of the Medical Education Department, located in the Education Centre of the Sunderland Royal Hospital.
The EWTR/rota Support Officer is responsible for offering support and guidance to departments and junior doctors in rota design and implementation in order to ensure compliance with national directives.
Over the past 2 years there have been considerable changes to national legislation and City Hospitals Sunderland has seen EWTR embedded within departments' working practices. The EWTR function has been specifically created to help identify ways in which the medical education department as a whole can further assist departments in supporting junior doctors working and also in looking at changes to working practices if necessary.
