The Podiatry Department provides a variety of footcare services in a number of convenient centres in Sunderland and North Easington.

Our clinics are purpose designed with up to date equipment, fully comply with the Department of Health Standards of Sterilisation of Clinical Instruments and adhere to the Control of Infection and Health and Safety standards. Wheelchair access is available at all clinics.

Our staff

Our Podiatrists are registered to the Health Professions Council whilst Podiatry Assistants have all completed the Society of Podiatry/Chiropody Assistant Programme or the Podiatry Assistant Foundation Degree.

To maintain our high standards, all must staff follow a programme of continuous professional development and have regular clinical supervision.

Our Podiatrist’s work closely with other health care professionals within the Trust. They liaise with them directly if referrals to other specialties are required to help relieve your symptoms.

All services are supported by a fully operational centralized Appointment Booking Centre which is located at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

Our services

General Footcare

This includes the provision of:

  • Corn removal
  • Callus (hard skin) reduction
  • General Footcare advice
  • Nail care
  • Orthoses (a type of insole that can reduce pain in joints; corns and from hard skin)

General Footcare is provided from 14 locations throughout the Sunderland and North Easington District.

Nail Surgery

Following assessment by your Podiatrist, and only if appropriate, you will be referred for Nail Surgery.

Nail Surgery is the total or partial removal of toe nail(s) under local anaesthetic with the application of Phenol, a chemical which stops the nail growing back. The procedure is provided at the Podiatry Department at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

Diabetes and Wound Care

The Podiatry Diabetes and Wound Care Outpatient Clinic treats patients with non-healing foot wounds due to diabetes or other causes such as neuropathy or vascular disease. There are 3 Specialist Podiatrists in this clinic, each possessing undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications and experience in the Diabetic Foot, Wound Care and Tissue Viability.

Access to this service is via Consultant, GP or Podiatrist referral only.

Podiatric Biomechanics/Appliance Department

The Biomechanics service is a specialized branch of our Podiatry Department. We focus on the abnormal function of the foot and leg and its associated symptoms. We have 3 Podiatrists specializing in Biomechanics, each possessing extensive experience in this area.

Only a GP, Consultant or Physiotherapist can make referrals to the service. Our clinics are at Sunderland Royal Hospital and Monkwearmouth Hospital. Waiting times for a new patient consultation is approximately 6 weeks.
