Anaesthetics
Anaesthetics is the largest department in the Trust, providing services and support in surgical theatres, intensive care, obstetrics, preoperative assessments, pain management and many others.
Anaesthetics is part of Theatres.
A major role of the department is providing support for the
surgical theatres. This encompasses theatres at Sunderland Eye Infirmary, various speciality theatres in the Obstetrics wing, Urology,
Radiology and the main theatres on C, D and F levels.
As part of the surgical pathway for any planned surgery,
patients are required to attend a PREP clinic, for Preoperative Risk Evaluation
and Preparation. This is a nurse-led service with clinical advice provided by
Anaesthetic Consultants.
Other than the operating areas, Anaesthetic teams look after
the critically ill patients in the Integrated Critical Care Unit and provide outreach service to at-risk patients in the wards.
The department provides 24 hours cover for the maternity unit
for women requiring pain relief with epidural during labour or requiring caesarean section.
There is well organised pain management unit in the department that provides advice for inpatients having difficulties with either pain after surgery or long standing pain. For those in chronic pain, outpatient clinics are situated around the region to bring patient-care closer to their homes in the community.
