Pupils at Richard Avenue Primary school have raised £1,250 to help babies and families at Sunderland Royal Hospital's Neonatal Unit. The school chose the unit as their chosen local charity for the year, since the unit benefits families throughout Sunderland.

Mrs Todd and Mr Howard (pictured left) organised a special assembly for a representative of City Hospitals Sunderland Charity, which represents the Neonatal unit, to speak to the children about how their fundraising will make a difference.

The children's dedicated year of fundraising will support local families by providing aids to help mothers and fathers bond with their babies while they remain in an incubator, as well as purchasing additional equipment for the unit.

"It was an absolute delight to meet the pupils and staff at Richard Avenue Primary" said Andy Pestell, Fundraiser for City Hospitals Sunderland Charity. "The school obviously has a stellar reputation for its diversity and quality of education - but I think this shows how much effort the staff value instilling character too.

"The pupils could not have raised this amount without imagination, passion, and a great deal of empathy - all of us at Sunderland Royal Hospital are so grateful for all they have done. What an incredible group of children."
