Medical Physics

The Medical Physics Department provides clinical services for patients, develops devices to support clinicians and provides general scientific advice.


These services are provided by a team of Clinical Scientists, Clinical Engineers, Clinical Technologists, Nurses and Secretarial staff. The service is also supported by two Radiologists, a Rheumatologist and a Cardiologist.

The department of Medical Physics is located at Sunderland Royal Hospital, Chester Wing Outpatients, C level. The department also provides services at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead and South Tyneside District Hospital.

Nuclear Medicine

With 4 general purpose dual detector gamma cameras and a dedicated cardiac gamma camera CHS provides Nuclear Medicine procedures for over 8500 patients at Sunderland Royal Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Gateshead and South Tyneside District Hospital.

Bone Density

CHS has 2 bone density scanners with which it provides over 3500 bone density scans at Sunderland Royal Hospital and South Tyneside District Hospital.

Physiological Measurement

The service provides intraoperative nerve monitoring for some adult patients undergoing spine surgery or complex hip replacements.

Clinical Instrumentation

This section assists clinicians by developing systems that either record quantities that cannot be measured with a commercial device, or by providing information in a more useful manner than can be provided by an existing device. The section also provides devices to assist patients in their daily lives. Some of the systems we have developed include:
