The department provides key specialist services within Diabetes, Endocrinology and Lipid disorder management for all patients from Sunderland, North Durham, Easington, Washington and South Tyneside. The department comprises a dedicated outpatient area as well as inpatient ward.

About the department
The department of Metabolic
Medicine is within the specialty of medicine, which deals with management of
people with Diabetes (abnormalities of blood glucose ‘sugar’ control),
Endocrinology (conditions leading to hormonal imbalance) and disorders of metabolism
such as Lipid (blood ‘fats’ and cholesterol) and Bone chemistry such as brittle
bone disease (Osteoporosis).
The department is staffed with
dedicated specialist consultants, nurses and pharmacists. Dedicated facilities
have been established with an Outpatient Unit (Entrance 10) and an In-Patient
Ward (E53) to provide non-urgent care and emergency care for patients with all
metabolic diseases.
Care is provided on a
multidisciplinary model with well-established links with several other key
disciplines at City Hospitals, these include: Bariatric Surgery, Ears, Nose and
Throat, Endocrine Surgery, Paediatrics, Podiatry, Obstetrics and Gynaecology,
Urology, Vascular Surgery and Spinal Surgical Team.
Ward E53
This is the main ward for patients with primary diabetes or
endocrine related problems at Sunderland Royal Hospital. We have established an
In-patient Team dedicated to supporting patients and staff. The ward also
caters for patients with General medical conditions.
Outpatient services
Several general and dedicated subspecialty
clinics have been established within the unit and in association with
colleagues from allied services.
Research and innovation
As a research active
department we keenly support local, regional and national research projects
with Sunderland University, National Research Centres, and have established
links with National Institute of Health Research (NIHR).
