Volunteers play an important part in our service and care delivery and we know their hard work and friendliness enhance the patient and family/carer experience at City Hospitals Sunderland. Our volunteers are not directly involved in patient care but help provide extra support to patients and staff and we are extremely grateful for all the support we receive.
All volunteers are asked to commit to at least one 2 hour shift per week and to attend volunteer roles on a regular weekly basis for a minimum period of 6 months. Not only will this enable you to settle in to your surroundings and familiarise yourself with your duties, but it will help us to get to know you and ensure that your role is the right one for you
We have a number of volunteer roles across our hospital to support our patients, which include:
- Hospital navigator volunteers
- Ward helper volunteers
- Help and Advice Service volunteers
- Patient satisfaction survey volunteers
- Chaplaincy volunteers
- Macmillan service volunteers
If you feel that volunteering at City Hospitals Sunderland is for you, look out for our next recruitment drive (usually in April and September). We only recruit to our volunteer group twice a year and roles will be advertised on the NHS Jobs website. You can register with the site to receive e-mail alerts when an advert to volunteer is posted. Applications will need to be completed via this website.
No experience or special skill is needed to become a volunteer. All we require is that you:
- are over 17 years of age;
- have good communication skills;
- are friendly and reliable; and
- work well in a team and independently
Please note that volunteer roles at City hospitals Sunderland do not involve shadowing clinicians and are not a form of work experience. If you would like to find out about work experience opportunities, click here.
