X-ray

The Radiology Department (X-ray)  consists of many different types of imaging procedures (modalities):

Plain Film

Computerised X-rays of bones and some soft tissue structures (eg chest, abdomen).

Fluoroscopy

Real time pictures on TV monitors from x-rays using an image intensifier to show the physiology of structures e.g. arteries, veins and gastrointestinal anatomy.

CT – Computed Tomography

Uses X-Rays and a circle of detectors to produce very thin Image slices through the body to demonstrate internal organs.

MRI – Magnetic Resonance Imaging

A modality that uses a complex system based on a very strong magnetic field to produce thin slices through the body, again to show internal organs. Very good at demonstrating soft tissue structures.

Mammography

Specialised imaging of the breast using x-rays. Sunderland offers a symptomatic breast service only. Breast screening service is located at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead

Ultrasound

A modality that uses ultrasonic waves that pass through the body with images constructed and viewed from the waves that bounce back. Used in antenatal care but also used for soft tissue abdominal organs and demonstration of arteries and veins.
