Trauma & Orthopaedics

The Department of Trauma and Orthopaedics provides a service to the population of Sunderland and surrounding areas. The department services include: Elective Surgery (both inpatient and day case), trauma clinics/surgery, new and review outpatient clinics, fracture clinics, spinal assessment service, limb reconstruction service and the knee service.



D48 – Elective admissions ward for all patients coming into hospital for planned surgery. It is a 35 bed mixed sex ward with single sex bays.

D43 – Trauma admissions ward for all patients that are admitted with orthopaedic injuries from A&E, fracture clinic and office trauma. The ward is a 30 bed mixed sex ward with single sex bays and is open for admissions 24/7.

D42 – Orthopaedic step-down ward providing rehabilitation for both trauma and elective patients. It is a 27 bed mixed sex ward with single sex bays.


Fracture clinic / outpatient department

All new and review outpatient clinics as well as trauma clinics and fracture clinics are held in the fracture clinic/out-patient department which is located next to the Emergency Department. We also provide the plaster service, dressings service and rehabilitation physiotherapy services from the outpatient department. The department offers a service to its patients from Monday to Friday 8-6 and Saturday and Sunday 9-1 for trauma patients.

The Department also offers the following services:- Spinal Assessment, Limb Reconstruction, Knee Service, Baby Hip Clinic.
