Stroke Unit

The Acute Stroke Unit (Ward E58) is a 36 bedded facility with a dedicated therapy suite. The unit provides facilities for patients who have suffered a stroke with dedicated and trained stroke nurses and therapy staff, who provide care and therapy within the ward area.

The Stroke Team has collaborated with colleagues both internally and externally from across South of Tyne to develop a new model for stroke care which delivers a high quality, safe and effective service including a 24/7 thrombolysis service. The implementation of new ways of working has ensured the Stroke Strategy standards have been achieved and there has been a massive improvement in terms of the vast majority of stroke patients now receiving their care on the Acute Stroke Unit by dedicated stroke specialists.

The team works closely with members of The Stroke Association to ensure an individual’s needs continue to be met following discharge from the service.

In addition there is a very successful Community Stroke Rehabilitation Team which has received national recognition from the Stroke Association for being the ‘most improved Community Stroke Team in the country’. The team has made huge strides in supporting stroke survivors in the community.
