Renal Unit

The Department of Renal Medicine is a sub regional unit providing renal investigations, treatment and renal replacement therapy to patients from the surrounding areas of Sunderland, North Durham and Gateshead and South Tyneside. The Department of Renal Medicine provides a full range of nephrology investigations and treatment supported by the Regional Transplant Unit at Newcastle Hospitals for Kidney transplantation


The service is based in Sunderland but has outreach clinics operating at both the University Hospital of North Durham (UHND), and South Tyneside Foundation Trust (STFT). There are also satellite units at Washington Primary Care Centre and UHND.


The Department comprises the following clinical areas:



This is the main renal ward at Sunderland Royal Hospital. It provides renal replacement therapy for acute kidney injury and established renal replacement therapy. It has a strong focus for patient centred care.


Renal Unit – Sunderland

This is the main renal unit it provides haemodialysis to a population of approximately 140 patients. The unit is open 6 days per week, treating three shifts of patients per day. It also co-ordinates the care and management of patients with acute kidney injury in the ICCU.


Satellite Renal Unit – Durham

The unit at Durham is a satellite dialysis centre providing out-patient haemodialysis to patients from the local area. It is a nurse led unit catering for approximately 40 patients.


Satellite Renal Unit – Washington Primary Care Centre

The unit at Washington is a satellite dialysis centre providing out-patient haemodialysis to patients from the local area. It is a nurse led unit catering for approximately 25 patients.


Ambulatory Care

This is an outpatient/day case area that provides a range of treatments and investigations for patients including the training and support of patients on peritoneal dialysis. Importantly it provides a point of contact for patients, and the flexibility to review complex patients acutely and frequently.

  • Pre-Dialysis (low clearance) Clinics
  • Dialysis Review Clinics
  • Nurse led Anaemia clinics (Sunderland and Durham)
  • Nurse led Intravenous Iron clinic

A number of review clinics operate within Chester Wing at Sunderland Royal Hospital, and there are outreach clinics in UHND and STFT.
