The Oncology service at City Hospital Sunderland provides a number of clinics for new and review patients referred for non-surgical cancer treatments such as: Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy and some other newly established treatments.  A number of Oncologists from the Northern Cancer Centre for Treatment (NCCT) at Newcastle, undertake clinics in Sunderland and manage a range of treatments across tumour types, including urology, colorectal, breast, lung, upper gastrointestinal, head and neck and gynaecological cancers. Multidisciplinary meetings to discuss and monitor patient progress are also held on the City Hospitals Sunderland site.

Outpatient clinics are held in CHS Chester Wing, with a qualified nurse who is part of the Chemotherapy and Haematology Day Unit team, supporting these clinics.

The  Phoenix Unit is the Trust’s Chemotherapy, Haematology and Infusion Day Unit.  The team has recently moved into this new unit from a very small facility and this expansion of space has allowed the inclusion of infusion services in terms of services provided.  Sunderland is recognised as a Cancer Unit and is part of the North of England Cancer Network.

The Phoenix Unit is overarching “hub” for a range of settings for the provision of chemotherapy Service – hospital, home and outreach – depending on a patient’s preference and treatment type.

The Home Chemotherapy service allows patients to have their treatment in the comfort of their own home and also provides them with a choice of where it is most convenient and suitable to receive therapy.   Outreach Service is provided from Washington Primary Care Centre.

In-patient chemotherapy is delivered to Haematology patients only at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

The Phoenix Unit is open Monday to Friday between 8.30 am and 7 pm and Saturday between 8.30 am and 2.30 pm.   This service is primarily nurse led, with a number of visiting consultant oncologists.  Additional support is provided by a Nurse Consultant in Oncology who is also the Trust’s Cancer Lead – the first time this role has been undertaken by a senior nurse rather than a consultant.  The Trust’s Consultant Haematologists also provide additional support to the unit.
