Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Maternity Unit

Sunderland Maternity Unit was purpose built and opened in 2000. It is situated on Level D in the Chester Wing.  The unit manages on average 3500 births per year and has a community midwifery led approach, with additional support available from a team of consultants for patients with medium or high risk pregnancies.  Ante natal care is provided by community midwives based in Children’s Centres,  GP Practices; and during home visits.  Low risk patients will attend the ante natal clinic in a hospital setting for their dating and anomaly scan.  However, medium and high risk patients will be required to attend more frequent hospital visits dependent upon their condition.

The Antenatal Day Unit is available for consultants, midwives and patients to refer into should they have any concerns about the wellbeing of the mother or baby.  Staff on the Antenatal Day Unit can undertake various investigations and arrange medical input should this be required

The Delivery Suite has 23 LDRP rooms (labour, delivery, recovery and postnatal) which are single en-suite rooms.  It is envisaged that patients who have an uncomplicated labour/delivery will remain in this room until discharge.  We are also able to provide waterbirths for those patients who have experienced uncomplicated pregnancies.

Please take a look at our Maternity Services film which explains the services provided and the choices available to women and their partners.
