The Neurology Department provides in-patient, out-patient and day case services to the local population of Sunderland and South Tyneside and manages a wide range of neurological conditions including:
- Multiple sclerosis
- Parkinson’s Disease and movement disorders
To support the consultant medical team there are a number of specialist nurses.
In addition there the Neurorehabilitation Service provides ongoing care for patients over the age of 16 with neurological conditions including brain injury and stroke.
The Neurophysiology Department provides in-patient and out-patient diagnostic investigations for patients in the surrounding areas of Sunderland, South Tyneside and North Durham. The service is based in Sunderland but has paediatric and adult satellite clinics operating at South Tyneside Foundation Trust (STFT). In addition, a portable service is offered for some in-patient investigations, both at Sunderlandand and at other hospitals in the North-East region.
The department currently offers the following investigations:
- Routine Electroencephalography (EEG)
- Sleep-Deprived EEG
- EEG with Sedation
- Videotelemetry (typically up to 6 hours)
- Portable EEG (bedside recording for in-patients unable to transfer to the dept)
- Neonatal EEG recording
- Overnight Sleep EEG
- Multiple Sleep Latency Testing (MSLT)
- Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)
- Electromyography (EMG)
The Neurology Secretaries are based in Chester Lodge which is next to the Chester Road entrance to Sunderland Royal Hospital (parallel to Chester Road itself)
The Neurophysiology Department is based in Woodford Williams Lodge which is on the 1st floor of the Trust Headquarters building (opposite Chester Road).
