The Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Unit is a sub regional department providing outpatient, inpatient and surgical ENT services for adults and paediatrics. The department works closely with Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS), Audiology and Speech and Language services.
Inpatient and outpatient services are provided at Sunderland Royal Hospital. The inpatient ENT ward is shared with OMFS. Other outpatient services are provided at surrounding districts of Durham, South Tyneside and Gateshead. Offsite evening clinics are offered to those patients living in the locality of Chester le Street and Peterlee. Consultant led outpatient clinics are supported by nurse practitioner service. The Niall Quinn centre is a dedicated department for paediatric outpatients.
Weekly multidisciplinary meetings are held for patients with head and neck cancers working in partnership with oncologists in Newcastle. Head and Neck Cancer Services include reconstructive surgery, specialist nurse, dietetic and speech and language support. There are also specialist clinics for skull base tumours, thyroid conditions, bone anchored hearing aids and voice restoration.
