The City Hospitals Sunderland Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Team provides care to inpatients and outpatients with wide ranging muscle, bone and joint problems. These include:

Orthopaedic Inpatients – We are based on the Orthopaedic wards and the Day Case Unit at Sunderland Royal Hospital. We look after you when you have been admitted to hospital for an orthopaedic operation or for treatment for an acute orthopaedic injury.
We treat patients who have been admitted for planned surgery e.g. joint replacements, and patients admitted for acute injuries such as a broken bone following a fall at home. We work within a multi-disciplinary team to aid your recovery and to plan your follow on care.
Musculoskeletal Outpatients – We are based in the Fracture Clinic, Orthopaedic Gym and Treatment Room at Sunderland Royal Hospital
We assess and treat patients in our outpatient department who require follow on care after an orthopaedic injury, operation or on discharge from the ward.
We also treat patients from other specialties such as Rheumatology, Neurology who need rehabilitation and help in managing their symptoms and pain
We have some specialist services:
Knee Service – We assess and treat all orthopaedic knee conditions including soft tissue injury and joint replacement. Treatment is on a 1:1 or group basis. Some rehabilitation is delivered at the Sunderland Aquatic Centre.
Limb Reconstruction – We treat children from birth with Talipes Equinovarus using the Ponseti method. We work as part of a multi-disciplinary team looking after patients who have had complex limb correction surgery and some specialist hip surgery. We also look after patients with other childhood orthopaedic disorders such as Perthes Disease.
Hand Service – We assess and treat all orthopaedic and rheumatology hand conditions. These include soft tissue trauma and fractures, as well as soft tissue, bony surgery and joint replacement surgery.

Where we work
Outpatient physiotherapy is provided within the Chester Wing, Rehabilitation Entrance 8 at Sunderland Royal Hospital.
Fracture Clinic is at Entrance 3 at Sunderland Royal Hospital.
Inpatient physiotherapy is provided on both the trauma and elective wards and within the Day Case Unit at Sunderland Royal Hospital.
Outpatients: 8 pm to 6 pm Monday to Thursday and 8 am to 5 pm Friday
Ankylosing Spondylitis Group: 7pm to 8 pm Thursday
Inpatients: 7 day ward based service 8 am to 8.30 pm with an on-call service until 9 pm (Monday to Friday)
