Macular roadshow set for Newcastle upon Tyne

Published: 23rd March 2018

A roadshow highlighting new treatments and research into macular degeneration is on its way to Newcastle upon Tyne this May.

The roadshow has been organised by the Macular Society, the UK’s leading central sight loss charity. It is one of four events, which will be taking place across the UK throughout May and June.

The Newcastle event, which takes place on Tuesday 15 May at the Discovery Museum, Blandford Square, Newcastle-upon-Tyne NE1 4JA, will give people with macular degeneration the chance to find out about the latest developments in treating their condition. They will also be able to hear from researchers on current medical trials.

Julie Swan, regional manager for the Macular Society, said: “Every year, our macular roadshows go from strength to strength as more and more people come along to find out the latest in the fight against macular disease.

“They’re a great place to showcase the different types of help and support that people can access if they have a macular condition. They also give us an opportunity to update people on all of the cutting-edge research currently being undertaken into macular disease.”

Attendees will hear from a range of leading experts including ophthalmologists, researchers and inspirational speakers. The event will also include a low-vision equipment and services exhibition, while a light lunch will also be available.

Julie said: “Once again, we’ve got a packed programme full of excellent speakers, and there will also be the chance for visitors to try out the latest gadgets and technology, designed to help people live their daily lives.

“Tickets are on sale now, so if you’re thinking of coming along to see us in Newcastle, get in touch with us as soon as possible to book your place.”

The event runs from 10.30am-3.30pm and is open to all those affected by macular conditions, their families, carers, friends and anyone interested in finding out more.

Entry to the event is by ticket only. Tickets are priced at £18 each and are available by calling 01264 350 551, or from the Macular Society website, www.macularsociety.org/roadshows, where a programme and list of speakers already confirmed for the roadshow can also be found.

In Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the Macular Society, in partnership with local people, organises a support group which offers vital information, encouragement and friendship to people living locally who are affected by macular disease.

The Newcastle-upon-Tyne Macular Support Group – one of more than 350 of its kind in the UK – meets on the third Wednesday of the month (excluding May, August and September), from 1.30-3.30pm at Newcastle Society For Blind People, Mea House, Ellison Place, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Tyne and Wear NE1 8XS.
